Breaking the City Gates
Chinese New Year is a festive time for great food, fireworks, exchanging lucky red envelopes, and having an all around good time. During Chinese New Year, kids can play the traditional Chinese game “Breaking the City Gates.” This game is similar to the American game “Red Rover.” To play, children form two teams of even numbered players. Each team forms a line and faces each other. One team says:
He stuck a feather in his hat,
And hurried to the town
And children met him with a horse
For the gates were broken down.
Then one player from the opposing team runs full force at the other team and tries to break through their “gate.” “If the player is successful, the two children whose hands he separated joins the opposite team. Then it's the other side's turn to sing. Each team takes turns until one side claims all of the players of the other side.
For the Holiday of the Chinese New Year people tend to really go all out and prepare meals like cook duck, pig, chicken and sweet delicacies. Firecrackers are also very used on this day and games and dances are done throughout the night. Decorate your event with many Chinese New Year party supplies and make it a year to remember.
